Each material and process has its greatest advantage. Aluminium has the advantage of being light and strong, castings have the advantage of being stable and can be reproduced in large quantities. Aluminium metal is heated into a hot slurry, which is poured into a mould to create the form.
A flared ‘sprue’ helps the aluminium to enter the mould, which is then knocked out or sawn off when the casting is complete. Inspired by this detail, we thought about what would happen if we kept the sprue and made it attractive. Combined with the dovetail and tenon section common in woodworking, dovetail slots are cut into the boards to push the casting ‘flare’ in, completing the wild hybridisation between different materials and features of the process.
